Carbon Neutral Chocolate | Alter Eco
This is an awesome eco-friendly chocolate bar to add to the cupboard! Iโve fallen in love with the environmental efforts of Alter Eco. Their aim is to plant roots for bio-diverse forests, and healthier lives for families and farmers.
Things to Love
๐ Fair Trade - Everyone is paid a sustainable wage
๐พ Organic - No nasty chemicals
๐ฑ Vegan - No exploitation of animals
โ๏ธ Non GMO - Natural biodiversity among crops
๐ B-Corp - Certified for positive social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.
โ Carbon Neutral Product - Alter Eco works with small scale farmers to directly source fair trade cocoa beans. They work with the PUR Project, an organization that helps companies to offset their carbon emissions through agroforestry.
๐ Eco-Friendly - Alter Eco is on a mission to help restore rain forests! 200,000 native shade and fruit trees are planted alongside cocoa crops. ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ด๐ณ๐ท Adding diverse plants naturally protects and replants the forest, creates bio-diversity in the canopy and forest floor, decreases soil erosion, offers better soil fertility, and reduces the chance of extreme weather, like flooding and drought. As a result crop quality and yield increase.
๐จโ๐พ Investing in Farmers - Through the PUR Project, farmers get to diversify their revenue by producing variety. The fruits they grow can be sold at local markets, providing villages with fresh local food. Adding trees and allowing them to grow provides farmers with a nest egg. In 30 years they will be able to harvest a portion of the trees for timber, as part of a sustainable timber protection program. Overall they get a more stable income.
Taste
As far as taste goes, this bar was smooth, malty and tangy. The quinoa provided a subtle crunch with each bite. Since finishing this bar (yes, it's long gone haha), I have also bought their blackout bar, a super dark 85% bittersweet chocolate. This was much too bitter for me, but I am keeping a well-trained eye out for their salt & malt, almond & salt, and sea salt bars. Can you a pattern here?๐
As always, thanks for reading.
